How to add a collaborator on Instagram AFTER posting (Aug 2026)

It’s happened so many times i’ve lost count.

It’s 2am, i’m posting my images of a band i shot a few hours ago. I’m trying to find every high follower active fan account of theirs to collaborate with to get the maximum number of people to see my work. I post. Ten seconds later, OH MY GOD i forgot (insert name of fan account with a billion followers). I go back to my post, i edit it, add the forgotten fan account as a collaborator. Done? Nope. Instagram just demoted that collaborator down to a simple tag on my photo. WHY INSTAGRAM WHY.

The like count on this would’ve been very different without collaborators.

I’ve been googling for months, searching every reddit thread, every random forum, no one has the answer to the question: Why can’t i add collaborators after posting? Well, today i found the answer. Is it satisfying? No, actually it’s not. It just exposes how painful Instagram wants to make our lives.

Everyone say “thank you, collaborators!”

So why wasn’t it working all these months? Because you can’t add collaborators AFTER posting if THEY don’t follow YOU. You follow them? Nope won’t work. Neither of you follow each other? Nope won’t work. The account you want to add needs to follow you. I tried it with a friend who follows me, i tried it with another account i manage, it worked. I asked a fanpage to follow me after Instagram kept relaying them to a tag. Guess what? It worked. They followed, they got added as a collaborator. FINALLY. It’s annoying that they added this caveat without telling anyone. All the more reason to double-check before posting!
